Mingridge Wood

The trees here are proper dense - oak and beech mostly, with enough undergrowth to make you feel genuinely removed from the world despite being just five miles from Newcastle's outer edge. Mingridge Wood isn't some manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards at every turn; it's a working woodland that actually feels like a place rather than an attraction.

Walkers get the most from it. The footpaths wind through enough terrain to keep you occupied for a couple of hours without feeling like a forced march, though the ground can be boggy after rain so boots matter. If you're after a quick stroll with the kids, you'll probably run out of steam before the wood does - it's not one of those "circular walk with a cafe" setups. History types might appreciate the sense of continuity; these woods have been here for centuries, though there's not much in the way of visible evidence to point to.

Free access, naturally, since it's just woodland. No gates, no fees, no operating hours to fret about. That's rather refreshing.
