Minefields

The minefields around Mitcheldean are a sobering piece of industrial archaeology that most tourists overlook entirely. What you're looking at is the scarred landscape of the Forest of Dean's deep mining heritage - evidence of centuries spent extracting coal and iron ore from beneath the woodland. The ground itself tells the story: subsided ponds, dramatic hollows, and spoil heaps that jut out from the forest floor like half-buried monuments to hard labour.

This isn't a visitor attraction with a visitor centre or interpretation boards. There's no admission fee because there's nowhere formal to visit. What you get instead is the raw landscape itself - a walk through woods where the earth has literally collapsed under the weight of what came before. It rewards closer inspection: the way water pools in the depressions, how the forest has slowly reclaimed the disrupted ground, the occasional brick or stone fragment turning up underfoot.

History enthusiasts and walkers with an interest in industrial heritage will get more from this than casual tourists. Families with young children might find it less engaging unless they're already into exploring woodland and spotting the subtle topographical clues. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper walk through the area.

The minefields sit comfortably within a Forest of Dean holiday. Pair it with the nearby glamping at Greenacres or Ryeford Ponds, both within five miles, and you can build a weekend around exploring the forest's past without crowds. Come in autumn when the leaves are down and the ground features are clearer.
