A crumbling shaft descending into Devon moorland, this abandoned mine tells the story of the region's industrial past without any visitor infrastructure or fanfare. You won't find gift shops or information boards here - just raw history and a proper sense of stepping back in time.

What remains is atmospheric in the way only derelict industrial sites can be. The shaft itself is fenced off for safety reasons, but you can walk the surrounding area and get a feel for how miners once worked this landscape near Newton Abbot. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity rather than convenience. Walkers exploring the moorland stumble upon it; history enthusiasts make the trip deliberately. Families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's not much to actually do beyond look and imagine.

There's no admission charge because there's nothing formal to charge for. Allow 20 minutes to half an hour unless you're planning a longer moorland walk, in which case it becomes a natural waypoint. The best time to visit is when the weather's clear enough to see across the moor and the ground isn't waterlogged.
