Minack Chronicles Nature Reserve

The Minack Chronicles Nature Reserve sits just outside Newlyn on Cornwall's dramatic south coast, and it's a proper windswept spot that rewards the walk. You're looking at a clifftop reserve where the Atlantic throws itself against the rocks below - the kind of place that makes you understand why people move to Cornwall and never leave.

What you get here is coastal moorland and grassland, managed to encourage wildflowers and ground-nesting birds. Spring and early summer are genuinely worth timing your visit for - the place erupts with colour and you'll spot skylarks, stonechats, and if you're lucky, peregrine falcons hunting overhead. The walking is straightforward enough, nothing technical, but the wind can be properly fierce so come prepared. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice without rushing.

This works best for walkers and birdwatchers rather than families with young kids - there's no facilities, no café, and it's essentially a wild coastal patch with minimal infrastructure. That's rather the appeal, mind. It's free to access, which is excellent.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby parks like Roselands or Lands End Camping, this makes a superb half-day outing before or after exploring the broader Penzance area. Pair it with the coastal path walks around Mousehole or Newlyn harbour itself. The reserve won't take a full day, but it's exactly the sort of honest bit of Cornish coastline that makes a park holiday feel properly spent.
