Milton of Mause

Walking out to Milton of Mause feels a bit like following a thread back through time. It's an Iron Age settlement tucked away near Blairgowrie, and what you're actually looking at is a defensive enclosure - basically a fort from over two thousand years ago, marked by the lines of its earthwork ramparts. The site itself is open access, which means you can wander round without paying or booking ahead, though the archaeological remains are subtle enough that you'll want to know what you're looking for or bring some background reading.

This is squarely for the history-minded walker rather than anyone after dramatic ruins or big interpretive boards. There's real value in standing on the ground where Iron Age communities lived and protected themselves, but it requires a bit of imagination and effort to get much from it. You'll need a decent map or GPS to locate it properly from Blairgowrie - it's not signposted in any obvious way.

Allow an hour including the walk in and out. Best visited as part of a wider exploration of Perthshire rather than a destination in itself. Winter's probably easier for spotting the earthworks through clearer vegetation.
