Milton Hill

Milton Hill is Northamptonshire's highest point at 680 metres, and honestly, it's a bit of an anticlimax if you're expecting dramatic views. The summit sits just outside Northampton, and what you get is a gentle rise through farmland rather than anything that'll take your breath away. That said, there's something satisfying about standing at the county's top, even if the landscape around you is resolutely flat and agricultural.

The walk itself is straightforward - you can approach from several directions, and it takes roughly 20-30 minutes depending on your route. Best tackled on a clear day when visibility stretches across the Midlands, though don't expect panoramic vistas. The hill works well as part of a longer walking route rather than a destination in itself, and families with younger children will find it manageable without drama.

It's free to visit, naturally, since it's basically a field. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water if it's warm. Spring or early autumn offer the nicest conditions - summer can be muggy and featureless.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Blisworth Park or The Home Farm CL, Milton Hill makes a decent leg-stretcher rather than a full day's activity. Combine it with a walk around Northampton's town centre or the Grand Union Canal if you want something more substantial. It's one of those 'might as well knock it off' spots rather than a reason to plan a trip, but if you're already in the area, the climb takes barely an hour.
