Mills Observatory

You'll spot it straight away - a Victorian observatory tower standing proud above Tayport, looking rather like something from a Jules Verne novel. Mills Observatory was built in 1836 and remains one of Scotland's oldest observatories, though it's the building itself that draws most visitors rather than active stargazing these days.

The main appeal is the architecture and the views across the Firth of Tay. It's not a vast attraction - you're looking at maybe 30 minutes to an hour if you're genuinely interested in the history of astronomy and 19th-century telescopes. The tower's quite compact inside, so it won't swallow an afternoon.

Walkers and architecture enthusiasts will get more out of it than families with young kids. There's no formal admission charge that we're aware of, but do check locally before making a special trip - opening hours can be patchy. The real value is stopping here during a coastal walk around Tayport rather than making it a destination in itself.

If you're based at Tayport Links Caravan Park or Larick Campsite nearby, it's absolutely worth the short walk to break up a day. The coastal setting is genuinely pleasant, and the tower photographs well. Just don't expect interactive exhibits or lengthy queues - this is proper old-school heritage, best appreciated by people who actually enjoy Victorian engineering and a bit of local history.
