Miller's Knowes Recreation Ground

Miller's Knowes sits just outside Hawick, a proper slice of the Scottish Borders that most folk rushing through to the market town completely miss. It's a nature reserve where you can actually walk without bumping into crowds - the kind of place where you notice things. Woodland trails wind through decent-sized trees, there's open grassland, and if you're lucky with timing you'll spot roe deer or hear woodpeckers doing their thing.

The walking's straightforward enough for families, though it's not a massive undertaking - give yourself an hour and you've seen the lot without feeling rushed. Older kids who can manage a mile or so on foot will find it engaging; younger ones might get bored if you're not the type to pause and point out birds. It's genuinely good for a woodland wander if you're staying at one of the local spots like Stouslie Snugs, which is barely two miles away and frankly offers a far more comfortable bed than most campsites.

The reserve works well as a half-morning activity rather than a full day's focus. Combine it with a mooch around Hawick itself - the town's got its textile heritage and a decent high street if the weather turns. Spring and early summer are best, when the woodland's properly alive and the light's at that angle that makes everything look better than it probably is. Admission appears to be free, which at least means you've not lost money if you decide it's not your thing after twenty minutes.
