Millennium Green

A proper green space just outside Sheffield where you can actually sit down with a sandwich without feeling like you're in a car park. Millennium Green is a community picnic site - nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. You get grass, some trees, benches, and room to spread out without navigating a theme park queue.

It's the sort of place families will use on a sunny afternoon, particularly those camping at Ingfield Farm or Broad Close Farm just down the road. Kids can run about, dogs are welcome, and there's enough space that you won't feel cramped even if a few other groups turn up. The walk from Sheffield takes twenty minutes or so depending on which bit you start from, making it an easy bolt-on to a city day if you can't face another café.

Timing-wise, go midweek if you want peace. Weekends bring out everyone for five miles around. Summer's obviously best, though it gets muddy after rain - worth knowing if you're towing a caravan from one of the farms nearby. The site itself is free, which is refreshing, though there's no facilities to speak of, so you'll need to bring everything with you.

Frankly, it won't eat up your morning. But if you're based at one of the surrounding campsites and want a change of scenery without driving far, it does the job. Think of it as a proper breather rather than a destination.
