Mill of Ross Crannog

The Mill of Ross Crannog sits in Argyll, a short drive from Alexandria, and it's one of those archaeological sites that rewards the effort to find it. A crannog is essentially an Iron Age dwelling built on an artificial island in freshwater lochs - think of it as prehistoric home security, with water doing the job of a moat.

What you're looking at here is the remains of one of these ancient structures, preserved remarkably well by the loch itself. It's not a massive visitor attraction with gift shops and interpretive centres - it's more intimate than that. You're standing at the water's edge looking at evidence of people who lived here over two thousand years ago. That tends to hit differently than reading about it in a museum.

This is genuinely worthwhile for anyone serious about Scottish archaeology or Iron Age settlement patterns. Parents with kids aged ten upwards might find it engaging; younger ones could get restless pretty quickly since there's not much to physically interact with. Allow about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photographs or really soaking up the location.

Pair it with either Inverbeg Holiday Park or Milarrochy Bay Camping Site - both are rated brilliantly and only a few miles away. The loch views make either base proper lovely for a week. The site itself is free to visit, though access can be weather-dependent and muddy underfoot. Spring through autumn is your best bet. It's not a day-long attraction, but as part of an Argyll archaeology crawl or a lazy afternoon's exploring, it's well worth the detour.
