Mill Marsh Park

Mill Marsh is one of those quiet corners of Devon that doesn't scream for attention, but once you're there you understand why locals keep coming back. It's a proper working nature reserve just outside Newton Abbot, managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust, and it actually delivers on what it promises - birds, wetland walks, the lot.

The reserve spreads across marshland and water channels where you can spot kingfishers if you're patient, plus the usual suspects like reed warblers and the occasional otter if you're lucky. There are gentle paths threading through, nothing strenuous, and it's the sort of place that rewards early morning visits when the wildlife is actually awake and doing something interesting.

It suits walkers and birdwatchers most, though families with young kids won't hate it - just don't expect playgrounds or ice creams. The real draw is simply watching the landscape work. Spring and autumn are best if you want migration action; summer can feel a bit sleepy. Entry is free and you can wander the trails at your own pace, though allow at least an hour if you're genuinely interested in seeing things.
