Mill Lane Park

Mill Lane Park sits just outside Cambridge, a proper nature reserve that punches above its weight. Walking in, you're immediately surrounded by reed beds and open water - it's the kind of place that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from the city.

The main appeal here is birdwatching. Bring binoculars and patience. You'll spot everything from common teal to the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky, especially during migration periods. The paths wind through different habitats, giving you varied vantage points across the wetland. It's not a strenuous walk - more of a gentle meander - which makes it good for families with younger kids, though honestly, children who fidget easily might lose interest after an hour.

Historically-minded visitors will appreciate that this is working wetland management, not just left to chance. The reserve maintains the habitat deliberately, which keeps the ecosystem healthy and the bird life consistently good throughout the year.

There's no entrance fee that we're aware of, and you can visit pretty much any time - dawn tends to be best for wildlife spotting. Allow a couple of hours for a proper explore. It works brilliantly as a half-day outing alongside staying at Pightle Farm Campsite, which sits about six miles south. Both give you that sense of being in proper countryside without straying too far from Cambridge's amenities.
