The lake sits quietly just outside Wokingham, a proper slice of calm that catches most people off guard. It's the kind of spot where you can actually hear yourself think - no ice cream vans, no blaring music, just water and whatever birds have decided to settle that day.

Mill Lane Lake works best if you're after a gentle walk rather than a destination in itself. The circuit round is manageable, good for families who don't fancy anything too ambitious, and dog walkers absolutely love it here. The water's dark and reflective, proper atmospheric when the light's right. You'll spot the usual suspects - ducks, the occasional heron if you're lucky - and in winter it's oddly beautiful, all bare branches and pewter skies.

Allow an hour or so for a full loop, longer if you're the type to stop and sketch or just sit on a bench. There's no café, no facilities to speak of, so bring your own coffee if you want one. Come early morning or late afternoon - you'll have the place practically to yourself.

If you're staying at Wellington Country Park six miles away, this makes a solid half-day outing. The park itself has more going on - there's activities, a lake for fishing - but Mill Lane offers something Wellington can't: proper solitude. Pair them together and you've got a decent weekend sorted without leaving Hampshire.
