Mill Hill Wood

Mill Hill Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Harrogate - the kind of place you stumble into thinking you'll be there for twenty minutes and end up staying twice as long. The trees are thick enough that you lose sight of the town almost immediately, which feels like a small miracle given how close you are to the high street.

It's ideal for families who've had enough of gardens and tea shops. Kids will actually engage with a forest in a way they won't with a manicured park - there's space to explore properly, fallen logs to climb over, and the sort of mud that washes off. The paths are manageable even with younger legs, though it's not flat, and after rain the ground can get squelchy.

Walkers get more out of it if they're willing to wander off the main routes and find the quieter corners. An hour is comfortable; two hours if you're in no rush. The woodland feels genuinely established, not recently planted, which means decent shade in summer and that good earthy smell in autumn.
