Mill Grove

The Forest of Dean has plenty of woodland to explore, and Mill Grove is one of those corners that doesn't shout about itself. It's a proper working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction - mixed woodland with streams and the kind of paths that change personality depending on the season. Heading in from Mitcheldean direction, you'll find yourself in quiet, unpretentious countryside where the main event is just walking between the trees and listening to what's actually there.

You're looking at an hour or two maximum here, depending on mood and fitness. There's no visitor centre, no café, no admission fee that I can find - just a forest. Families with younger kids might lose interest quickly; it's not a playground or a themed walk. But if you've got walkers in your group, or anyone who actually likes the sound of birds more than gift shops, this works. The streams are genuine selling points in dry months, and the canopy is thick enough that it stays cool even on proper summer days.

Stay at Passage Farm Caravan & Campsite or The Roost Retreats - both are within two miles - and you've got a solid base for the wider Forest of Dean exploration. Mill Grove fits naturally into a longer woodland ramble rather than a destination in itself. It's the sort of place that rewards getting properly lost for a bit, which in Gloucestershire usually means bumping into something unexpected.
