The water at Mill Dam is the kind of flat, still surface that catches the light properly on a clear day - the sort of thing that makes you understand why people bother with Lancashire when they could be heading elsewhere. Dog owners come here regularly - there's room to let them off without anyone getting wound up. Birdwatchers actually know the place; the water attracts wildfowl depending on season. Allow an hour for a decent loop, longer if you're the type to sit and watch.

The practical bit - it appears to be free access, though you'll want to check locally as these things change. Go early or late to avoid the car park crush, though honestly it's rarely heaving. Winter's quieter but can be grim if the wind picks up across that water.
