Milford Haven Marina

Standing at the water's edge, you're looking at one of Wales' largest natural harbours rather than a traditional lake - though the sheltered waters feel wonderfully calm and lake-like. The marina stretches along the waterfront with rows of sailing boats and yachts bobbing gently against their moorings.

Families will find plenty to occupy an hour or two wandering the pontoons and watching the harbour activity. Kids love spotting the different boat types, from tiny dinghies to proper ocean-going yachts. The promenade makes for easy pushchair access, and there's usually something happening - boats coming and going, or the occasional seal popping up between the moorings.

Walkers can follow the harbour edge for miles, with decent views across to the Pembrokeshire hills. The town centre sits just behind the marina, so you can easily combine a waterfront stroll with a coffee stop or bit of shopping. It's free to wander about, naturally.

From nearby holiday parks like Little Haven Campsite or Creampots Touring Caravan & Camping Park, this makes a solid backup plan when the beaches are too windy. Not exactly a day out in itself, but Milford Haven's working harbour has more character than many purpose-built marinas. The kids will get restless after an hour, but it's well worth the short drive from your base.
