Milford Golf Club

Golf at Milford sits just south of Guildford, and it's one of those courses that doesn't shout about itself but absolutely should. The layout meanders through proper Surrey heathland - sandy soil, gorse, the works - and you get the sense the architect knew exactly what they were doing when they routed it back in 1901. Eighteen holes that punish sloppy play but reward good course management.

This is squarely for golfers, obviously. Handicappers will find it a genuine test; beginners might struggle a bit, though visitors are welcome if you ring ahead. The greens here are firm and lightning-quick, especially come summer. Allow four and a half hours, minimum.

The beauty of staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Glamping Holiday is about forty minutes away, Care Ashore even closer - is you can play Milford as part of a proper Surrey golf trip. There are other courses in the area, but this one's the pick of the bunch for sheer playability and character. It feels like actual golf, not a theme park version of it.

Access details are a bit vague, so do get in touch directly before you go. Weekday rounds tend to be quieter, and the course walks brilliantly in autumn when the heather's still got colour. Not a day-tripper sort of place - you're here to play, full stop. Well worth the drive from Guildford town centre.
