Milecastle (site of)

The Romans built something remarkable along this stretch of Cumbria - a small fortress that once stood guard over Hadrian's Wall. What you'll find now is mostly earthworks and the faint traces of stone foundations, scattered across moorland near Wigton. It's not dramatic stuff. There are no reconstructed walls or visitor centres here, just you, the landscape, and whatever the archaeologists have worked out from the ground.

This isn't a day-long attraction. You're looking at thirty minutes to an hour wandering around, reading interpretation boards if they're there, and trying to picture Roman soldiers doing their rounds two thousand years ago. History buffs and wall-walkers will find it genuinely interesting - there's something powerful about standing where actual people stood. But children might struggle to see why a few bumps in the ground merit a special trip.

Walking the wall itself is the real draw here. The Milecastle sits within easy reach of the broader Hadrian's Wall Path, which means you can string together several sites in a day if you're keen. The landscape rolls on for miles - proper Cumbrian fell country with views that make the walk worthwhile even when the archaeology feels slight.

Glendale Holiday Park sits only a couple of miles away, making this a natural stop during a longer wall exploration. Go early or late in the day when light hits the stone differently. And bring waterproofs - the weather up here changes fast.
