Milecastle 77 (site of)

The stones at Milecastle 77 don't announce themselves. You're walking the Hadrian's Wall Path near Wigton when suddenly the ground beneath your feet shifts - literally. The Roman fort's foundations are still there, just under the turf, a faint rectangle in the grass that tells you exactly where the garrison stood nearly 2,000 years ago.

There's not much to see in the dramatic sense. No reconstructed walls, no visitor centre, no interpretive panels explaining the daily routines of auxiliary soldiers. What you get instead is the raw archaeology - a genuine milecastle site where Roman sentries once kept watch over the Wall. If you're the type who can stand in an empty field and feel the weight of history, this is brilliant. If you need a museum display and a café, you'll be disappointed.

It works best as part of a longer walk along the Wall rather than a destination in itself. Allow an hour or so to explore the site properly, sketch out where the buildings were, maybe sit with a flask and contemplate the view north towards Scotland. Families with young children might lose interest quickly unless you're properly into Roman Britain - but keen walkers and history types will find it genuinely moving.
