Milecastle 73 (site of)

A few stones scattered across moorland near Wigton is all that remains of this Roman fort from Hadrian's Wall. You won't find much - just low fragments of the wall itself, some earthworks, and a lot of imagination required. But that's rather the point: Milecastle 73 is where history becomes tangible without being prettified.

What you're looking at is genuinely 1900 years old. The Romans built these small fortlets every mile along the wall to house garrisons and control movement. This one sat roughly two kilometres west of Birdoswald, another fort on the same line. The site sits openly on farmland - no barriers, no museum, no gift shop. You just walk up and there it is.

It's worth visiting if you're already exploring Hadrian's Wall properly, especially if you're staying at Glendale Holiday Park nearby. On its own, it won't keep you busy for long - twenty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely interested in Roman military logistics. The real appeal is piecing together what stood here: barrack blocks, a gatehouse, stores. Your phone and a bit of reading beforehand make it click.

Walkers will enjoy this more than casual tourists. The moorland views are decent, and the walk between here and other wall sites offers proper country walking. Winter's actually rather good - fewer people, clearer sightlines across the landscape.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll need to check locally about footpaths and farmer access. It's genuinely off the beaten track, which means it feels less compromised than some wall sites further east.
