Milecastle 42 (Cawfields)

A stretch of Hadrian's Wall with actual Roman stonework still standing - that's what stops you in your tracks at Milecastle 42. Near Haltwhistle in Northumberland, this isn't a reconstructed fantasy. You're looking at a genuine fortlet built around AD 128, complete with the original stone gatehouse and defensive walls that legionaries walked past nearly two thousand years ago.

The site sits on moorland with proper views across the Tyne Valley. You can walk the perimeter, peer into the gatehouse chambers, and actually trace where the Wall ran. It's less polished than some heritage attractions - no visitor centre, no themed cafés - which is partly why it works. What you get is archaeology without the theatre.

History enthusiasts will spend a solid hour here, working through the stone foundations and imagining the logistics of Roman frontier life. Walkers love it because the surrounding landscape rewards exploration - the Wall's route offers some of Northumberland's finest long-distance paths. Families with young kids might find thirty minutes enough unless they're already keen on Roman Britain.

Free to visit, accessible year-round. Haltwhistle makes a decent base if you're tackling multiple Wall sites - the Camping and Caravanning Club Site is only 3.5 miles away. Go in spring when the moorland isn't waterlogged, or autumn when the light's better for photographs. Don't expect amenities or facilities. Just come prepared for weather and bring a good guidebook - the stones tell their story best when you understand what you're looking at.
