Milecastle 25 (Codlawhill)

You'll find yourself on a windswept stretch of Hadrian's Wall where the Romans built one of their smallest fortifications, and honestly, it's the kind of stop that rewards the curious far more than the casual walker. Milecastle 25 sits between two larger forts, basically a checkpoint where soldiers would have monitored movement along the wall - nothing fancy, just stone foundations and a gateway, but stand there on a clear day and you get a proper sense of what these men were guarding.

The site itself is free to access and takes about twenty minutes to walk around properly. There's not much to see in terms of standing structures - you're looking at low-level remains, mostly - but that's oddly compelling if you're into Roman archaeology. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract; teenagers and serious history types will spend longer picking over the details and imagining the garrison going about their daily routines.

Winter's actually the best time to visit. Fewer tourists, clearer views across the Tyne Valley, and the low sun catches the stones at angles that photographs can't quite capture. Summer brings the crowds to more famous sections like Housesteads, which means you'll often have this stretch to yourself.

If you're based at East Farm Glamping nearby - about four miles south - this makes a solid half-day walk as part of exploring the wall corridor between Newcastle upon Tyne and the deeper Northumbrian sites. Bring proper boots. The ground's boggy even on decent days.
