Milecastle 24 (Wall Fell)

The stones at Milecastle 24 don't announce themselves. You walk up through bracken and moorland near Wall Fell, and suddenly there's the evidence - crumbling Roman walls cutting across the landscape like someone left them yesterday rather than two thousand years ago.

It's a working section of Hadrian's Wall where the archaeology isn't roped off or museum-fied. You can actually touch the stones, walk between what's left of the barrack blocks and gates. The milecastle was a checkpoint where Roman soldiers counted traffic and controlled movement. What you see now are the foundations and lower walls - enough to understand the layout but not so reconstructed it feels fake.

Historygeeks will spend a proper hour here mapping out the fort's layout. Families with younger kids might find forty minutes is their limit unless the weather's kind and there's energy for climbing about. It's a solid walk from Newcastle or Corbridge if you're doing a broader Hadrian's Wall day, though the nearest sensible base is East Farm Glamping just a few miles away - good if you want to explore multiple sections without moving accommodation.

The view across the Tyne Valley from up here pays for the climb. The downside? It's exposed and bleak when the wind's up, and there's no facilities whatsoever. Come prepared with water and warm layers. Summer's the obvious choice, but autumn brings sharper light and fewer tourists picking their way through the stones.
