Mile Fortlet 1

A stretch of grass near Wigton holds the remains of one of Rome's smallest outposts - Mile Fortlet 1, a tiny defensive position that once guarded the Stanegate road across northern England around 80 AD. There's not much to see on the ground, truth be told. You're looking at low earthworks and the faint outline of a fort that would have housed perhaps thirty soldiers, their job to keep watch and relay messages along the frontier.

It's the kind of place that appeals to serious Roman history enthusiasts or archaeology students rather than casual day-trippers. If you've already done Hadrian's Wall or visited larger forts like those at Corbridge, this gives a proper sense of how the Romans controlled territory - not just with massive walls, but with a network of tiny posts scattered across the landscape. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a short walk, but don't expect reconstructions or visitor facilities. Bring an ordnance survey map and a bit of imagination.

It puts you within striking distance of both this fortlet and the bigger Roman sites to the north. Allow thirty minutes here, maybe an hour if you're genuinely into the period. Best visited on a clear day when the earthworks cast shadows and you can actually make out the fort's shape.
