Migvie Kirk

The drive to Migvie Kirk takes you through proper Deeside countryside, rolling farmland and Scots pine forests that make you remember why people come to Aberdeenshire. The kirk itself is a small, austere stone church sitting quietly in its graveyard - the kind of place where you can hear the wind properly. It's genuinely ancient, with real historical weight, though the exact dates are frustratingly vague. Inside, it's spare and cold in the way Scottish rural churches are, with thick walls and windows that don't let much warmth through. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes here if you're thorough, longer if you're the type to spend time reading gravestones.

This works best if you're combining it with Deeside's walking trails and the nearby campsites - Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site is only 2.8 miles away, which puts you nicely positioned for exploring the area. Firbank Park and Cairngorms Glamping are also close enough to make this a natural stop on a wider Aberdeenshire loop. History buffs and church explorers will get something from it; kids will find it a bit dull unless you make it part of a bigger adventure. There's no visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared - nearest services are in Aboyne itself. Free to visit, naturally. Best in spring and summer when the graveyard isn't waterlogged and the light actually reaches inside the building.
