Migdale Rock

The walk up Migdale Rock starts in Ardgay and climbs steeply through mixed woodland before opening onto moorland with proper panoramic views across the Highlands. It's a relatively short scramble - most fit walkers will manage it in under two hours return - but the gradient is no joke, especially in wet conditions. The summit itself is rocky and exposed, which means the views south toward the Moray Firth and west into the mountains actually feel earned. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey day, frankly, you're mostly seeing cloud.

This is genuinely good terrain for hillwalkers who want something straightforward but with a bit of character. Families with younger kids might find the initial push steep and tedious - it's less scenic woodland ramble, more proper uphill slog - but teenagers keen on peaks will enjoy ticking it off. The rock formations at the top make for decent photos if you care about that sort of thing.

There's no official visitor infrastructure at Migdale itself, so bring water and something to eat. The nearest accommodation is Ardgay Glamping, just down the road, which is a proper option if you're basing yourself here for a few days of Highland walking. The whole area around Ardgay works well for a quiet park holiday where you want to get out and walk rather than queue at attractions. Allow a full morning or afternoon for the walk itself, longer if you're taking photographs or moving slowly.
