Middletons Road Recreation Ground

Just east of Peterborough, Middletons Road Recreation Ground is a proper slice of wetland that most visitors to the area completely miss. It's the sort of place where you'll spot kingfishers darting along the water if you're patient, and where the reeds actually feel like they go on forever. The site is a working nature reserve - think wet meadows, ditches, and the kind of habitat that matters to wading birds and small mammals rather than manicured paths and visitor centres.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it. Bring binoculars and decent boots because it can be boggy, especially after rain. If you've got kids, expect them to lose interest after thirty minutes unless they're already into spotting birds or hunting for frogs. It's free to access and open most of the time, though facilities are minimal - there's no café or visitor infrastructure, which is rather the point.

Stay at Ferry Meadows just down the road and this becomes a nice morning walk before heading elsewhere in the Nene Valley. It's not the sort of spot you'd travel forty miles for on its own, but if you're camped nearby and fancy a quiet hour watching the water, it absolutely delivers. The light's best in early morning when the mist still clings to the reeds.
