Middleton Wood

The woodland around Middleton sits on the edge of Matlock's rougher moorland, where Douglas firs and mixed deciduous trees create proper shade even on bright days. It's the sort of place locals walk through without thinking much about it, which is precisely why it works so well - no crowds, no cafe queues, just straightforward forest paths.

What you get here are decent walking trails through the trees, nothing demanding but solid enough for a morning or early afternoon outing. The ground can be muddy after rain, so boots make sense. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though it's not a playground experience - children need to be reasonably happy with "just walking through trees" rather than expecting facilities or dramatic viewpoints. Older walkers and anyone after a quiet hour away from things will find it more rewarding.

The whole area works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Carsington Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Carsington Fields are both within striking distance, making this an easy leg-stretch between a day at Carsington Water itself or exploring Matlock's gorge walks. You could easily combine it with other Derbyshire woodland routes for a proper walking holiday.

No admission charge that we can find, and no specific opening hours - it's the sort of place you simply show up. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you dawdle and actually notice the trees rather than just pass through them.
