The village sign at Middleton is one of those quietly excellent things Norfolk does so well - a hand-painted wooden affair that tells you something genuine about the place rather than just stating the name in corporate sans-serif. It's positioned where you'd naturally pause walking through the village, and it's worth stopping for a proper look.

What makes it work is the detail. The artist has captured something specific to Middleton's character, and it's the kind of thing that makes you realise how much personality these villages have if you actually slow down to notice. It's not a major production - you're looking at this for five minutes, maybe ten if you're the type who reads the whole thing and thinks about it. There's no visitor centre, no café, no entry fee. You just turn up and look at it.

Families with young kids might find it underwhelming on its own, but it's genuinely charming as part of a slower walk through the village. History enthusiasts will get more mileage out of it if they combine it with a broader wander around Middleton itself. The sign works best as a stop-off rather than a destination.

If you're staying at Kings Lynn Caravan & Camping Park just across the way, it's barely worth driving to - a gentle walk from the site, actually. Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa, five miles out, is probably too far to make a special trip. But on a rambling sort of afternoon, it's exactly the kind of local detail that makes a holiday feel less like tourism and more like you're actually getting to know a place.
