Middle Pond

Middle Pond sits just outside Shildon as a proper working water feature - no grand visitor centre or fancy signage, just a lake that's been serving the area for years. It's the sort of place locals know about and tourists stumble upon by accident, which is rather the point of it. The water itself is calm and reflective, surrounded by bankside vegetation that changes character through the seasons. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the pond attracts wildfowl and waders depending on the time of year. A straightforward walk around the perimeter takes about half an hour at a leisurely pace, making it a decent leg-stretcher rather than a full day commitment.

This works best for people who actually like water features rather than those expecting theme park thrills. Families with young kids will get maybe an hour out of it before restlessness sets in. History types might find the industrial heritage angle interesting - these ponds often had working purposes in Durham's manufacturing past. It's the sort of place you'd visit between other activities rather than drive miles to see on its own.

Free to access, no car park in the traditional sense - you park along the road and walk in. Best visited when the weather isn't waterlogged, otherwise the paths get proper muddy.
