Middle Lake

The water at Middle Lake sits still and dark, surrounded by flat Northamptonshire countryside that stretches out with barely a ripple in the landscape. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, which is precisely its appeal.

This is proper fishing territory. The lake draws anglers from across the region who know what they're after - pike, perch, and carp mostly. But you don't need a rod to enjoy it. The walk around the water is straightforward and pleasant, with decent views across the lake to the surrounding fields. Wildlife watchers will find plenty to occupy them; herons work the shallows and there's a good chance of spotting waterfowl depending on the season.

It works well for families doing a longer holiday at Castle Farm Campsite or Brightside Caravan Park, both within five miles. The younger ones will get a solid hour or two here without complaint - it's far enough from Peterborough to feel properly countrified, yet accessible enough that you're not wrestling with rural navigation.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends pull in the fishing crews and it loses some of its quiet appeal. Early morning or dusk are best - the light's better and you're more likely to see wildlife properly. There's nothing fancy about Middle Lake, no facilities that I'm aware of, no entry fee. That's rather the point. It's the sort of spot locals value and tourists often miss entirely.
