Middle Hill

The walk up Middle Hill takes you out of Auchterarder and into proper hill country without needing a full day's expedition. It's one of those Scottish peaks that rewards you quickly - a brisk climb with decent views across Perthshire waiting at the top, and you're back to the car park within a couple of hours.

The ascent itself isn't technical, but it's steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned the vista. On a clear day you get views sweeping across toward the Ochils and down toward the Carse of the Forth. The moorland around the summit has that rough, windswept character that reminds you you're in proper upland terrain, not some manicured park walk.

Families with older kids will get on with it fine. Younger children might struggle with the gradient, though it's not a scramble. The whole thing takes maybe two hours from start to finish if you're not dawdling, which makes it a natural fit alongside a park holiday at Alexander House - you can knock it out before lunch and spend the afternoon on easier pursuits.

Mid-morning is best for this one. The weather rolls in quickly from the west in Perthshire, so don't hang about if you're planning to enjoy the views. Wear proper walking boots; the path gets boggy in places and the descent can be treacherous when wet. Free to access, as with most Scottish hills - no charge, no nonsense.
