Middle Fish Pond

Middle Fish Pond sits just outside Doncaster, a modest stretch of water that punches above its weight if you know what to do with it. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors miss, which feels about right for a South Yorkshire lake that doesn't shout about itself.

The water itself is calm and reflective, surrounded by enough green space to make it feel removed from the town proper. It's genuinely nice for a walk round, though don't expect dramatic views or rare wildlife - this is more about a peaceful hour or so by the water than a major day out. Birdwatchers do quite well here, and if you've got fishing credentials you can apparently cast a line, though you'll want to check current permissions first as details are thin on the ground.

Families with young kids will manage a circuit without grumbling, though teenagers might find it a bit low-key. The real appeal is as a proper breather if you're staying at Sunnyview Touring Park just down the road - close enough for a morning stroll without packing the car. It breaks up a caravan holiday nicely.

As a standalone destination, it's not worth a special journey, but if you're in Doncaster anyway or based nearby for a week, it's absolutely worth an hour of your time. Free to visit, naturally, and there's usually space to park.
