Mickle Rigg

The walk up Mickle Rigg isn't one that'll have you queuing at a summit cairn with fifty other people snapping selfies. This is proper fell walking territory just north of Keswick, and you'll find it's a genuine slog if you're not used to the Lake District's relentless terrain.

You're looking at a straightforward ascent across open moorland with views that stretch back toward Skiddaw and the wider Lakeland peaks. The fell itself isn't particularly dramatic - it's more about the sense of effort and achievement than standing on some knife-edge ridge. Allow three to four hours for a round trip depending on your fitness and which route you take from the valley.

This is walkers' territory, not a casual afternoon stroll. Families with young kids would likely struggle; teenagers who've got some hill experience under their belt will manage fine. History types won't find much - this is elemental Lakeland, just you and the landscape.

Since there's no café or visitor centre up there, bring proper kit: waterproofs are non-negotiable in the Lakes, and navigation skills help when the cloud comes in. Mickle Rigg works brilliantly as part of a wider fell day if you're camping at places like Kestrel Lodge or Caldbeck, both within a few miles of Keswick. Pair it with other northern Lake District peaks for a proper trip.

Go on a decent weather day - you'll know whether it's worth it within the first fifteen minutes of climbing.
