Micheldever Woods

Ancient woodland that stretches across Hampshire like something out of a fairy tale, though the reality is far grittier and more rewarding than any storybook. Micheldever Woods is proper old - we're talking centuries of established trees, with paths that wind through beech and oak in a way that feels genuinely timeless. You'll find yourself walking through dappled light, the kind that changes everything about how a forest feels.

It's ideal for serious walkers rather than casual strollers. The terrain can be muddy and uneven, especially after rain, so come prepared with decent boots. Allow two to three hours if you want to really explore without rushing. Families with younger kids might find it a bit demanding - there's no obvious loop trail or clear start-and-finish point, which some will love and others will find frustrating.

Free to access, naturally. No visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and know where you're heading before you arrive. Winchester is just down the road, making this an easy addition to a wider exploration of the town and surrounding area.

Stay at Hookpit Farm Caravan Site or The Spinney, both within three miles, and you're well-positioned for woodland walks here as well as trips to Winchester's cathedral and high street. Holden Farm Camping further out is worth the drive if you want something with more amenities. The woods are best visited in autumn when the canopy really shows itself, though spring brings bluebells that justify the mud on your boots.
