Mewslade Quarry Cave

Just a short scramble down from the cliff path above Mewslade Bay, this natural limestone cave cuts right into the Gower Peninsula's rocky coastline. You'll spot the dark opening easily enough as you walk the coastal footpath - it's positioned perfectly for a quick detour if you're exploring this stretch of the coast.

The cave itself is more of a large fissure really, running back into the cliff face for about 50 metres. Proper torch essential unless you fancy stumbling about in the dark. Water drips constantly from the ceiling, so expect to get a bit damp, and the floor can be slippery underfoot.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of adventure will get the most from it. The younger ones might find it genuinely spooky - that echoing drip and the way voices bounce around can be quite atmospheric. Not one for claustrophobes either.

Being part of the Gower's limestone geology, it's free to explore whenever you like, though common sense applies about tides and weather. Allow 20 minutes for a proper look, longer if you're combining it with the coastal walk.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Gower Holiday Village or Bank Farm Leisure, it makes a decent morning expedition before the beaches get busy. The cave sits well within striking distance of Rhossili and the western Gower coast.
