Mevagissey Marine Aquarium

The tanks at Mevagissey Marine Aquarium are packed with proper local catches - pollack, bass, wrasse, the sort of fish you'd actually see in Cornish waters rather than tropical rarities from halfway round the world. It's a small operation, run with genuine care by people who know what they're on about.

You'll spend a solid hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to read every label. The focus is entirely on British marine life, which means kids get to spot the creatures they might glimpse on a rockpool adventure. There's something rather refreshing about that - no need to explain coral bleaching or justify why you're looking at fish bred in captivity when the real thing swims just offshore.

Free entry is a proper bonus, though donations are clearly welcome and feel right given the work that goes into maintaining these tanks. Open April through October, which makes sense - peak season for families and the summer holiday crowd. If you're staying at Treveague Campsite just up the road (it's only 2.4 miles away), this pairs well with a morning at the beach in Mevagissey itself. The harbour's where the fishing boats actually land, so there's a nice through-line to what you've just seen in the tanks.

It won't hold teenagers for long, but younger kids who like fish will find it worthwhile. Adults after a quiet twenty minutes with a coffee and some local knowledge of the seabed will appreciate the no-nonsense approach.
