Methlick Wood

Methlick Wood is a proper forest walk just a few miles from Ellon, the kind of place that quietly rewards you for showing up without any fuss. The woodland trails wind through mixed woodland - birch, pine, and Scots fir mostly - with decent paths that don't demand specialist kit. It's nothing dramatic or Instagram-famous, which is exactly why it works.

For woodland walkers and families after a straightforward couple of hours outdoors, this hits the mark. The terrain is fairly manageable, not too boggy, and you can easily turn back whenever you fancy. Kids won't be bored if you're prepared with the whole "spot the birds" routine, though it's not got the jawdropping views that get children excited. There's a nice sense of being properly in the forest rather than just strolling through a manicured park.

If you're based at Ythan Valley Campsite - which is barely over three miles away - Methlick Wood is an obvious morning or afternoon option. It fits perfectly into a wider Aberdeenshire loop if you're exploring the area around Ellon. Access appears straightforward, though there's nothing official about it being signposted or groomed to death, which I'd consider a selling point.

Give yourself an hour to ninety minutes unless you're really lingering. The walk justifies itself without demanding a major time commitment, and on a decent day the light filtering through the trees is genuinely lovely. Not essential, but solidly worth it if you're in the area.
