Mersehead Plantation

Mersehead Plantation is a proper forest walk rather than a manicured visitor attraction - all Scots pine, spruce, and the occasional surprise of open moorland when the trees thin out. You're working through mixed woodland on decent tracks, the kind of place where you might spot roe deer if you're quiet, and the air smells genuinely like a forest should. It's free to wander and there's no entrance fee or visitor centre nonsense, which means it keeps that real, ungoverned feel.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The trails aren't dramatic or Instagram-famous, but they're solid - probably an hour to ninety minutes depending on which path you take, and the terrain is manageable without being boring. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in, but if your children are the type who want to hunt for insects and build stick houses, they could easily spend longer here. The forest canopy is thick enough that it's decent shelter on drizzly Scottish days, which matters when you're camping nearby.

From either Parkdean Resorts Southerness or Castle Point - both just five miles or so away near Dalbeattie - Mersehead makes a solid half-day outing. It's the kind of place you combine with something else rather than drive specifically to see, but that's precisely what makes it useful. Real forest, no queues, no entry fee. Can't fault that.
