Mereworth Woods

Ancient woodland in the heart of Kent - Mereworth Woods is the sort of place you wander into expecting a quick twenty-minute loop and emerge three hours later wondering where the time went. The trees here are properly old, with beech and oak creating a dense canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days. Paths wind through the forest floor, some well-trodden and obvious, others narrower and more exploratory.

This is walker territory, genuinely. If you're after something to do beyond the usual park infrastructure, Mereworth delivers. Families with older kids will find it engaging - there's enough space to let them roam without losing sight entirely. Younger children might flag once the novelty of "being in the forest" wears off, unless they're the type who get excited about finding sticks and spotting birds.

The woods work brilliantly as a morning or afternoon excursion from any of the nearby camping spots around Sevenoaks - Gatehouse Wood and Badgells Wood are both within a few miles. You could easily base yourself at one of the local parks and use Mereworth as your daily walking spot without feeling like you're repeating yourself. The beauty is that the woods change throughout the day as light filters through differently, so even if you revisit, it feels different.

Best visited outside school holidays if you want peace. Spring is particularly good when the woodland floor comes alive. No facilities to speak of, so bring water. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you actually enjoy being lost among trees.
