Meresfelle Nature Reserve

The wetland at Meresfelle is one of those places that rewards you for getting your boots muddy. It's a proper working nature reserve just outside Bideford, and what makes it special is that you're not just walking a sanitised loop - you're genuinely in habitat that matters. The reserve protects reedbeds and wet meadows, the sort of landscape that birds actually need, and on a decent morning the birdwatching can be excellent. Expect to see warblers in summer, winter wildfowl when it's cold, and if you're lucky, the odd kingfisher threading through the channels.

This isn't a five-star visitor experience with café and gift shop. Access can be muddy and unmarked in places, which some will find refreshing and others will find irritating. Serious birders and naturalists will absolutely get their teeth into it; families with young kids might manage an hour before boredom sets in. The best time to visit is early morning when wildlife is most active, and May through September is cracking for spotting migrants and breeding birds.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Roeys Retreat and Atlantic Horizons are both close by - Meresfelle makes a brilliant morning mission before heading to the beach or exploring Bideford proper. It's the sort of local knowledge that transforms a holiday park stay from "nice enough" to properly memorable. Pack binoculars, accept you'll get wet feet, and go with realistic expectations about facilities. That's when it really sings.
