Mere Hill Spinney

A small woodland reserve tucked between Barrow upon Soar and the wider Leicestershire countryside, Mere Hill Spinney is the sort of place you either stumble upon or deliberately seek out - there's no in-between. The spinney itself is modest: ancient woodland with a proper mix of broadleaf trees, the kind of spot where you might actually hear birdsong rather than traffic.

It's genuinely rewarding for walkers and anyone interested in woodland ecology. The paths are manageable, nothing demanding, and the trees create that enclosed, slightly mysterious feeling you get in old English woods. Spring brings bluebells; winter shows you the structure of the place. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - nuthatches and various warblers turn up depending on season.

The reality: you're looking at forty minutes to an hour here, not a full afternoon. It's free to access, as far as most local woodlands are, though there's nothing in the way of facilities. No cafe, no visitor centre, no car park signage - just quiet woodland. That's either exactly what you want or a reason to look elsewhere.

If you're based at Hill Top Caravan Park or Ragdale Glamping - both within six miles - this makes a lovely morning walk before heading to somewhere with more infrastructure. Pair it with Barrow upon Soar's canal walks or push on to larger parks in the area. Worth the detour if you're after a genuine woodland experience rather than a manicured nature attraction.
