Merchant Adventurers' Hall

The timber-framed courtyard just off Fossgate in York stops you dead. It's a merchant's hall from 1357, which means you're standing in what was essentially the medieval equivalent of a gentleman's club, except the gentlemen in question were making serious money from wool and cloth. The building itself is the real draw here - soaring wooden beams, a central courtyard open to the sky, and rooms that still feel lived-in despite being seven centuries old.

Inside, you'll find period furnishings, some decent medieval artefacts, and the kind of dark wood panelling that makes you understand why the Victorians went mad for this aesthetic. The undercroft is properly atmospheric if you're into that sort of thing. It's the sort of place history types will linger for a good hour, poking about in corners and reading every label. Families with kids under ten might find it a bit sparse - there's not much to actively do, just look at.

The location is brilliant for breaking up a day in York itself. If you're staying at Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park just outside the city, this is a fifteen-minute walk into the centre. Allow forty minutes here, longer if you're thorough. It's free entry, which is the main reason to bother - lovely building, genuine medieval atmosphere, but you're basically paying for the privilege of wandering round someone's old house. Still worth it though.
