Memorial to Neil Usher

A small stone cairn stands on the hillside above Newtonmore, marking where Neil Usher fell during the 1746 Battle of Culloden. It's a sobering spot - quiet, windswept, the kind of place where history feels genuinely present rather than performed.

The memorial itself is modest. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just a cairn with an inscription and views down the glen toward where the main battle took place a few miles south. You can see why someone would stop here - the Highlands have a way of making the past feel recent, and standing on this hillside, it's easy to imagine the chaos that unfolded.

This isn't a destination in itself. You won't spend hours here. But if you're staying at Laggan Glamping or Invernahavon - both within a couple of miles - and you're interested in Jacobite history, it's worth the twenty-minute walk up from the road. The approach takes you through proper Highland terrain, heather and rough grass, which adds to the experience. Weather matters here; come on a clear day and the vista is excellent. Come in mist and it's atmospheric rather than pleasant.

Histoire buffs visiting the area should make the trip. Families with young children might find it underwhelming without context. The nearest substantial museum is Culloden Battlefield itself, further south, where you'll get the full story before or after visiting this quieter memorial. Allow an hour if you're walking from the caravan parks, longer if you're coming from Newtonmore itself.
