Creag na Doire Duibhe

The walk up Creag na Doire Duibhe from Newtonmore is properly steep, but the Highland views make every burning thigh muscle worth it. This isn't a casual stroll - you're looking at a solid hill walk that climbs around 600 metres, taking most people two to three hours up and back depending on fitness.

What you get at the top is that classic Scottish moment: moorland stretching away in every direction, the Monadhliath Mountains rolling out before you, and on a clear day, views that stretch across proper wilderness. The name means 'the crag of the black wood' in Gaelic, though most of the ancient forest is long gone. You'll walk through rough grazing land and heather, passing the odd cairn and boulder field. It's atmospheric rather than dramatic.

Serious walkers will love this. It's the kind of walk where you actually feel like you've earned the view. Families with older kids keen on outdoor stuff can manage it, but little ones will struggle with the sustained climb and rough terrain. The nearest town, Newtonmore, sits on the edge of Cairngorms National Park, so you could combine this with other walks in the area.

Stay at Laggan Glamping (just 2.8 miles away) or Invernahavon if you're making a proper holiday of it. Both are well-positioned for exploring the Highlands. There's no admission charge - it's an open hill - but go early on decent weather days because good days bring walkers. Allow a full morning or afternoon, and wear proper boots.
