Memorial Park

It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured gardens job - think heathland, grassland, and patches of woodland doing their thing without much fussing about. You're looking at birds, wildflowers if you time it right, and the kind of walking routes that make sense when you've got an afternoon to kill near Buxton.

The reserve suits walkers best. You won't find benches every hundred yards or information boards explaining what every plant does - it's more about getting your boots on and exploring. The views across the moorland are the main draw, and on a clear day you get a genuine sense of being out on the Derbyshire hills rather than just walking round the edge of a town. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will do fine here. Younger ones might get restless unless spotting wildlife counts as entertainment.

Getting there from Buxton takes ten minutes by car, which puts it within easy reach of both Lime Tree Holiday Park and the Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - both rated five stars and sitting just five miles out. Budget a couple of hours minimum if you're treating it as a proper walk rather than a quick stroll. Spring and early summer are best for flowers and bird activity, but honestly, any time when the weather's cooperative will do.
