Walking into Melcombe Wood feels like stepping into someone's private estate - there's a formality to it that sets it apart from the typical Somerset forest. The woodland here has that managed, almost aristocratic quality you find in older estates, with mature trees creating genuine shade and a network of paths that actually go somewhere rather than looping back on themselves after fifty metres.

It's a solid spot for a proper woodland walk if you're staying at Glamping on the Hill just down the road - close enough to pop over for an hour without making a day of it. The trees are decent-sized, the paths are clear, and it doesn't feel like you're trudging through a plantation. Kids won't be bored if they're the type who enjoy spotting wildlife and climbing fallen logs, though there's nothing here that'll keep under-tens entertained for hours.

The main drawback is access information online is pretty thin on the ground. You'll want to check locally in Mells before you head out - parking and exact entry points aren't always obvious from a distance. Free access is likely, but worth confirming before you arrive. The wood sits within walking distance of the village, which has a decent pub and a few shops, so you could combine it with a proper village wander.

Go if you're after quiet woodland and don't need bells and whistles. Skip it if you want dramatic views or a major destination.
