Measand

Measand sits quietly in the fells above Penrith, a fell-top meeting point that's been used as a gathering place for centuries. It's basically an open moorland spot where several paths converge, and on a clear day you get proper fell views stretching across to the Lake District peaks. Nothing fancy - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just grass, stone, and honest landscape.

Walkers and fell enthusiasts will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place you pass through rather than stop at for hours, but that's rather the point. If you're hiking the Eden Valley or tackling routes from Penrith way, Measand makes a logical rest point and a decent photo moment. The approach itself matters more than the destination - it's the walk that counts.

There's no admission fee because there's nothing there to charge for. Allow as long as your route demands - it's not a standalone attraction you'd drive to specially. Spring and autumn offer the clearest visibility; winter can get bleak and exposed, so check conditions before heading up.

If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Park Foot, Sykeside, or Waterfoot are all within a few miles of Penrith - Measand works well as a waypoint on a bigger fell day rather than a destination in itself. It's straightforward, free, and properly atmospheric when the weather plays along. Don't expect facilities. Do expect space and quiet.
