Meanwood Farm Orchard

The old orchard at Meanwood Farm sits just outside Leeds, and it's the sort of place that sneaks up on you. Walking between the gnarled apple and pear trees feels properly removed from the city, even though you're barely a few miles out. The trees themselves are the main draw - some of them have been here for decades, and you can tell by the way they sprawl and twist in all directions.

It's worth a visit if you're into fruit trees or just fancy a quiet wander off the beaten track. The setting's peaceful, and there's something quite satisfying about walking through an actual working orchard rather than a manicured garden. Children can run about without much danger, though it's not set up as a playground - it's genuine farmland, not a theme park.

Give yourself an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who likes to sit and sketch or take photos. Spring's the obvious choice if you want to see the blossoms, but autumn's lovely too when the fruit's on the trees.

If you're staying at Haighfield Holiday Park nearby, this works as a proper morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's not flashy, and there's no cafe or facilities to speak of, but that's rather the point. Real orchards rarely are.
